Carnival

Carnival in the Caribbean has a complicated Origin. It’s believed to have ties to colonialism, religion, and ultimately freedom of celebration. Historian’s believe the first “modern” form of Carnival that we all know and love originated in the 18th century in Trinidad and Tobago where an already large number of free Blacks resided. While it’s origins may have began in T&T, Carnival is celebrated world wide including Jamaica, Antigua, even in Miami. The three main elements of Carnival; masquerade, music, and dancing remain central to all forms of carnival wherever it’s taking place. We hold own Carnival every fall semester, and it’s an event every student on campus looks forward to. Pictured on the left is our 2019-2020 eboard after our event. With the pandemic it’s hard to imagine how we’ll top previous carnivals but this tradition will never die. Stay tuned and follow us on instagram to see what we have in store!
